can’t believe it

So, I listened to Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” album a couple weeks ago. I listened to each song once and then deleted it off my computer. Why did I delete it you ask? Well because it was filth.

to e·man·ci·pate means:

1. To free from bondage, oppression, or restraint; liberate.
2. Law. To release (a child) from the control of parents or a guardian.

I don’t know which one she was getting at on this album. From my vantage point, I believe she was leaning towards the second definition. Let’s take a look at one of the songs called “Your Girl”.

I’m going to make you want to get with me tonight
I’m going to put those naughty thoughts in your mind
I’m going to show you clearly i can rock your world
You’re going to know for sure that I should be your girl

Did you really read those lyrics? Go ahead, read them again. The lyrics she just put down on that track really doesn’t bring true freedom. It brings more oppression and bondage. Ask any child who was born out of wedlock. Ask any child who had their parents divorce. Ask any young lady who has been hurt by guys that used their body for pleasure and left them high and dry.

If you really look past the self-centered, pleasure seeking mentality, you’ll see that there are inherit problems with this type of thinking. On another song, “To The Floor”, she echoes this sort of “emancipation” with the lyrics: “…I’d like to try you … the time is right for you and i. it’s going down tonight… whatever happens, it’s going down tonight; cause you and me got business you and me are going to handle tonight.”

I will give Mimi some credit because she does try to round the album out with some sort of spiritual echo in her song “Fly Like A Bird.” Nevertheless, I felt it was lacking because there was no depth. Anyone can sing about a lord, but who is that person? Is her faith so shallow or ashamed that she can’t talk about the person she calls lord? And where is reference to her lord on any other part of her album? It makes me wonder if this person really is her lord.

…because I feel the unconditional love from one who cares
enough for me to erase all my burdens and let me be free to
fly like a bird, take to the sky, i need you now lord, carry me high
don’t let the world break me tonight
i need the strength of you by my side…

don’t let the world break me tonight cause
i need the strength of you to survive

i need you to come and carry me higher lord

Why am i so picky in the music I listen to? Well, because I get to choose the music I listen to. It’s a shame that so many people are listening to this crap just because it’s cool and everyone else is.

If we put filth in our brains, do not be surprised when filth comes out.

Its sad how we reach for God in lyrics, but reach for idols everywhere else. We need satisfaction in more than passing and temporary things … we need more than filth :o )

I just stumbled across your site and don’t know who you are but think you’re so wrong for bashing Mariah Carey. She’s a real person that needs the love of god and expresses her need for god through her albums. Maybe you shouldn’t judge so much. Take the plank out of your eye buster.

I love how people leave comments with no name. Oh the mystery.

I do have planks that I’m removing, please don’t worry about that. As far as judging, the Bible clearly states that we are to be wise in how we live. We are not to conform ourselves to the world. I have not pronounced judgement on Mimi, nor did I pass along any judgement that the Bible has in it.

I agree with you, It is great to share the love of Christ and I would if I ever met Mariah Carey. I would share how much Jesus loved her; that He died on the cross for her so that she might have true freedom and live with eternal life. What she needs to do is surrender her life to Christ. John 3:16
